FAQs

Common questions answered.

Five of the questions we hear most often on carpark and street linemarking gear. Full knowledge base on our FAQ page.

  • Why dustless sanding?

Connecting the sander to a dust extractor pulls dust off the surface before it lands. Cleaner finish (no embedded dust), faster work (no clean-up between grades), safer respiratory environment. Mandatory under Safe Work AU silica 0.05 mg/m3 for masonry, concrete, fibre cement work.

  • Mirka DEROS, DEOS or LEROS?

DEROS = electric random orbital (5mm / 8mm orbit, 125mm / 150mm pad) - general flat sanding. DEOS = electric flat for narrow surfaces - detail work. LEROS = long-reach extension sander - ceilings + high walls. Pick by the dominant work surface.

  • Abranet vs paper abrasive?

Abranet is mesh-net - dust extractor pulls dust THROUGH the mesh pattern instead of clogging the surface. Lasts longer + cuts faster than paper. Standard kit on Mirka dustless sanders.

  • 5mm or 8mm orbit?

5mm orbit for finer finish + better paint prep (less scratch depth). 8mm orbit for faster stock removal + heavier sanding work. Most Mirka DEROS models offer both orbits as variants.

  • What abrasive grit sequence should I use with dustless sanding?

Start with a coarser grit to remove material quickly, then step through finer grits for a smooth finish. For bare timber: P80 → P120 → P180. For paint preparation: P120 → P180 → P240. For topcoat finishing: P240 → P320 → P400+. Skip no more than one grit step at a time — skipping grits leaves scratch marks visible under the final coat. When using dust-free sanding systems, ensure the extraction hose is connected and the extractor bag or HEPA filter is not blocked, as blocked extraction reduces both finish quality and operator safety.

Why dustless. Connecting the sander to a dust extractor pulls dust directly off the surface before it lands. Cleaner finish (no embedded dust under the next coat), faster work (no clean-up between grades), safer respiratory environment (less airborne silica + wood dust). Mandatory under Safe Work AU silica exposure 0.05 mg/m3 standard for any masonry / concrete / fibre cement work.

Mirka DEROS + DEOS + LEROS. DEROS is the electric random orbital sander (5mm / 8mm orbit, 125mm / 150mm pad). DEOS is the electric flat sander for narrow surface (Detail Electric Orbital Sander). LEROS is the long-reach extension sander for ceiling + high-wall work. All connect to Mirka dust extractor via standard 27mm or 36mm hose.

Abranet. Mirka Abranet is the mesh-net abrasive that the dust extractor pulls dust through - the mesh pattern means dust doesn't clog the abrasive surface, so the disc lasts longer + cuts faster than traditional paper abrasive. Standard kit on Mirka dustless sanders.
