FAQs

Common questions answered.

Five of the questions we hear most often on carpark and street linemarking gear. Full knowledge base on our FAQ page.

  • Waterborne or solvent: which line marking paint do I need?

Waterborne by default for any ATS 4110 longitudinal marking work. ATS 4110 5.5 permits waterborne provided the paint carries a current APAS 0041/5 approval; the contractor submits a Certificate of Product Conformity to the Principal (5.7) and retains batch numbers electronically (5.8). Solvent only where the Principal has explicitly approved it under 5.6 (typically for winter work where waterborne cure is too slow, or specific carriageway sections); solvent paint must carry APAS 0041/2 approval. For carpark, sports field and private property work, both work, with waterborne as the cleaner default and solvent as the faster-curing option in cool weather.

  • What APAS approval do I need for council and state-spec work?

APAS 0041/5 for waterborne paint, APAS 0041/2 for solvent. Both are referenced in ATS 4110 5.5 and 5.6 respectively. The APAS approval certifies that the paint formulation meets the durability, retroreflectivity (when paired with ATS 4110 Clause 5.12 glass beads) and adhesion specifications required for longitudinal pavement marking. The contractor must submit the Certificate of Product Conformity for the proposed product to the Principal (ATS 4110 5.7) at least 21 days before commencement of work (Hold Point 1), and retain the batch / certificate numbers electronically (5.8).

  • What wet film thickness should I run for ATS 4110 work?

350 to 400 microns on waterborne paint to seat Type B-HR beads at the target 60 percent embedment for retroreflectivity. Too deep (over 400 microns) and the bead sinks too far for light to bounce back, even though the bead is there. Too shallow (under 350 microns) and the paint cannot grip the bead under traffic and the bead shears off. Travel speed is the operator-side variable that controls WFT at a given pump pressure and tip orifice; the Transport for NSW worked example for 100 mm centre line at the 0.234 inch RAC 5 bead nozzle is 2.7 km/h target travel speed for 60 percent embedment with Type B-HR beads.

  • Is sports field paint different from road paint?

Yes. Sports field (turf) paint is formulated to bind to grass blades without killing the grass, hold colour through one growing season, and wash through a FieldLazer unit without leaving residue. Road paint (Damar Aqua, Crystalite) is formulated for bitumen, asphalt and sealed concrete; running road paint through a FieldLazer unit on grass damages the turf and is not what either system is calibrated for. For sports grounds, cricket pitches, soccer and football fields, school ovals, use specialist turf paint colours. For carparks, council streets, contractor public-road work, use the Damar Aqua or Crystalite waterborne / solvent ranges.

  • Does aerosol line marking paint count for ATS 4110?

No. Aerosol paint (Spraywell Highway Line Marker, others) is outside ATS 4110 longitudinal scope. Aerosol is the right call for touch-up where a unit pass is overkill (single-spot fix on a worn line, surveying marks before a pavement overlay, temporary diversions during traffic management, sports field set-up marks before a unit pass). For permanent ATS 4110 longitudinal marking, the work must use waterborne or solvent paint applied by a unit that meets ATS 4110 Clause 6 capability (automatic pattern control, dual-angle bead delivery, application rate calibration).

Choosing the Right Line Marking Paint

Line marking paint comes in three working classes: waterborne (the default for ATS 4110 longitudinal markings, low VOC, the standard council and contractor choice), solvent-borne (restricted under ATS 4110 unless the Principal approves it), and aerosol (for touch-up, surveying and temporary marking outside ATS 4110 scope). Pick by the work, the surface, and whether the job needs APAS conformance.

Waterborne paint for council and contractor work. Damar Aqua Road Marking Paint in 15 L (white ARL0103S, black ARL1003S, yellow ARL6103S, red ARL8903S) and Crystalite Water-Based Road Marking 20 L (white WBW20, black WBBK20) are the standard waterborne choices. Waterborne paint is permitted under ATS 4110 5.5 provided it carries a current APAS 0041/5 approval and the contractor submits a Certificate of Product Conformity to the Principal (ATS 4110 5.7). Wet film thickness target on waterborne paint for ATS 4110 work is 350 to 400 microns, which seats Type B-HR beads at the target 60 percent embedment for retroreflectivity.

Solvent-borne paint for Principal-approved jobs. Crystalite Solvent-Based Linemarking Paint in 15 L (yellow SBCCRLP15Y, white SBCRLP15W) is the solvent option. Solvent paint is NOT permitted for ATS 4110 longitudinal markings unless the Principal specifically approves it (5.6); where approved, the paint must carry APAS 0041/2 approval. Solvent paint cures faster than waterborne and is more tolerant of cool / damp pavement, which is why some Principals approve it for winter work or specific carriageway sections. Confirm Principal approval before specifying solvent on any council or state-spec job.

Aerosol for touch-up, surveying and temporary marking. Spraywell Highway Line Marker aerosol (white CBT0110, yellow CBT1910, grey CBT1710, plus CBT1010) is the aerosol option. Aerosol paint is outside ATS 4110 longitudinal scope and is the right call for touch-up where a unit pass is overkill (single-spot fix on a worn line, surveying marks before a pavement overlay, temporary diversions, sports field set-up marks). Aerosol is not a substitute for unit-applied paint on permanent council or contractor work.

Glass beads and the embedment target. ATS 4110 longitudinal markings require glass beads complying with Clause 5.12 (Type B-HR, C-HR or D-HR per APAS 0042). Type B-HR (fine 0.5 to 1.0 mm) is the standard pairing with waterborne paint at 350 to 400 micron WFT. The Transport for NSW worked-example math: at 100 mm centre line with the 0.234 inch RAC 5 bead nozzle, target travel speed is 2.7 km/h and bead weight target is 2.7 kg per measured length on a 150 mm line. Type C-HR (0.85 to 1.4 mm) intermix at not less than 30 percent by mass is the audio-tactile thermoplastic requirement (8.22). Type D-HR (coarse, high-refractive-index) is the wet-night enhancement option.
