FAQs

Common questions answered.

Five of the questions we hear most often on carpark and street linemarking gear. Full knowledge base on our FAQ page.

  • What is cold applied plastic line marking?

Cold applied plastic (CAP), also known as MMA after the methyl methacrylate resin, is a two-component pavement marking material that cures by chemical reaction at ambient temperature. The two streams (resin and catalyst) are combined at the gun, applied to the pavement, and cure within minutes to a hard, bonded film. CAP lasts 5 to 8-plus years on heavy-traffic asphalt and is the durability tier above thermoplastic and well above waterborne paint. ATS 4110 5.11 permits CAP for longitudinal markings on both sprayed seal and asphalt, provided it complies with AS 4049.4 and carries APAS 0041/3 approval.

  • MMA 1:1 versus 98:2: which ratio do I choose?

The 1:1 ratio (LineLazer V 200MMA 1:1) splits resin and catalyst evenly, mixes at the gun via the Fusion ProConnect Gun, and is the standard choice for walk-behind CAP work. The 98:2 ratio (LineLazer V 250MMA 98:2 Self-Propelled) is catalyst-rich rather than balanced: 98% resin, 2% catalyst, fed through a single resin-dominant pump. The 98:2 unit is self-propelled (petrol drive) and suits long-line CAP runs where ride-on speed matters more than the at-the-gun mixing simplicity of 1:1. Both are HP Reflective with pressurised bead delivery, both run at 3,300 PSI / 228 bar / 22,800 kPa across the 200MMA range, both meet ATS 4110 5.11.

  • Is CAP suitable for sprayed seal as well as asphalt?

Yes. ATS 4110 5.11 explicitly permits CAP for longitudinal markings on both sprayed seal and asphalt. That is one of the reasons CAP is specified for high-traffic intersections in regional council areas where the carriageway can switch from asphalt-overlaid CBD blocks to sprayed-seal rural approaches: one material, one unit, both surfaces. CAP also tolerates lower pavement temperatures during application than thermoplastic, which extends the marking season in southern Australia.

  • Are glass beads required with CAP?

Yes. ATS 4110 5.11 mandates that CAP be used in conjunction with glass beads complying with Clause 5.12, which means Type B-HR, C-HR or D-HR per APAS 0042. The HP Reflective designation on the 200MMA and 250MMA unit refers to the integrated pressurised bead system: dual 120 lb tanks deliver beads onto the wet CAP film at controlled pressure, which is what enables the consistent retroreflectivity ATS 4110 Annexure B Table B1b requires (white longitudinal markings: 350 mcd/m squared/lx within first 30 days, 200 mcd/m squared/lx between days 365-395, intervention threshold 150). For audio-tactile CAP, white uses intermix plus surface-applied beads; matt grey or matt black is NOT retroreflective and carries no beads.

  • Does CAP work meet ATS 4110 compliance for council and state contracts?

Yes, provided the contractor holds current Painting Contractors Certification Program (PCCP) accreditation under ATS 4110 4.1 (Class 20 long-run major roads, Class 21 short-to-medium-run minor roads, Class 22 audio-tactile, Class 27 removal), and the CAP material carries APAS 0041/3 approval and AS 4049.4 conformance. The unit itself must meet ATS 4110 Clause 6 equipment capability: automatic pattern control (skip-line), dual-angle bead delivery for retroreflectivity within 15% in both directions, and tested-and-calibrated application rates. The Graco LineLazer V 200MMA HP Reflective 2-gun and the V 250MMA Self-Propelled meet the Clause 6 specification; quote the unit with bead, anti-skid, and a tested-and-calibrated commissioning service to deliver the full ATS 4110 package.

Choosing the Right Cold Applied Plastic (MMA) Applicator

Cold Applied Plastic (CAP), also called MMA after the methyl methacrylate resin, is the highest-durability ATS 4110 longitudinal marking material. It cures cold by chemical reaction (no heat, no waiting for paint to dry), bonds to both sprayed seal and asphalt, and lasts five to eight-plus years on heavy-traffic asphalt. CAP is the right call for signalised intersections, bus lanes, high-wear corners, and any council or contractor work specified to ATS 4110 Clause 5.11, AS 4049.4 and APAS 0041/3.

Walk-behind 1:1 plural-component. The Graco LineLazer V 200MMA 1:1 HP Reflective is the production walk-behind CAP unit, available as 1-gun (17Y271) or 2-gun (17Y512). The Innovative Flow Divider splits the resin and catalyst at exactly 50% each, the Fusion ProConnect Gun mixes the two streams at the gun (not in a pre-mix pot, so working pot-life is not the constraint), and the Air-Purge clears the mixing chamber on shutdown. RAC 5 SwitchTips clear tip clogs without unbolting the gun. 3,300 PSI / 228 bar / 22,800 kPa across the 200MMA range. Buyers who want the gun bundled in the unit order the configuration variants 17Y234 and 17Y513.

Self-propelled 98:2 catalyst-rich. The Graco LineLazer V 250MMA 98:2 HP Reflective Self-Propelled (17G589) runs the same HP Reflective platform with a 98:2 ratio (98% resin, 2% catalyst), petrol drive, and pressurised bead delivery. The 98:2 system suits long-line CAP runs where the operator needs ride-on speed and a single resin-dominant feed. Same ATS 4110 / APAS conformance as the 200MMA range.

Glass beads are required, not optional. ATS 4110 5.11 mandates that CAP be used in conjunction with glass beads complying with Clause 5.12 (Type B-HR, C-HR or D-HR per APAS 0042). Where CAP is applied as a structured pattern (e.g. ribbed audio-tactile), coverage must be 60-80% with maximum height 4 mm. For audio-tactile CAP: white is retroreflective with intermix and surface-applied beads; matt grey or matt black are NOT retroreflective and carry no beads. Bead retroreflectivity targets per ATS 4110 Annexure B Table B1b: white longitudinal markings 350 mcd/m squared/lx within first 30 days, 200 mcd/m squared/lx between days 365-395, intervention required below 150.

Sprayed seal AND asphalt, both in one unit. Unlike thermoplastic (which struggles on raw concrete and needs a primer pass on most concrete) and waterborne paint (whose pavement bond is not a long-life solution on heavy-traffic asphalt), CAP/MMA bonds to sprayed seal AND asphalt directly. ATS 4110 5.11 explicitly permits CAP for both surface types. That makes the 200MMA unit the most versatile durable-marking machine in the GO range: one rig, both surfaces, multi-year service life.
