FAQs

Common questions answered.

Five of the questions we hear most often on carpark and street linemarking gear. Full knowledge base on our FAQ page.

  • 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch hose?

3/8 inch for higher flow rate and lower pressure drop on long hose runs (typically 30 m and over) or on industrial unit where pump flow is high. 1/4 inch for lighter weight and easier handling on shorter runs (under 15 m) and on professional and homeowner sprayers. Most professional contractors run a 15 m 1/4 inch main hose with a 0.9 m whip on the gun for residential and light-commercial work; long-line and industrial work moves to 3/8 inch. For viscous materials, use the 1/2 inch out-of-manifold step-down technique.

  • What is the step-down technique for viscous materials?

Best practice from Graco technical: for viscous materials (Level 5 plaster, roof restoration membrane, high-build coatings), use 1/2 inch x 15 m hose out of the manifold and step down to 3/8 inch x 15 m for the second length with a joining nipple. The 1/2 inch first section maximises flow rate from the pump (less pressure drop close to the pump where flow is highest); the 3/8 inch step-down keeps the gun-end manageable for the operator (1/2 inch is too stiff for fatigue-free gun handling). Single piece of long 3/8 inch hose works but pressure drop is higher and flow is reduced on viscous material.

  • Why use a whip hose?

The whip hose sits between the main hose and the gun, providing a flexible short hose section that reduces operator fatigue from main-hose stiffness at the gun. Standard whip is 0.9 m (3 ft); longer whips available for ladder and high-access work. Without a whip, the main-hose stiffness transfers to the operator's wrist and shoulder over long sessions; the whip absorbs that.

  • RAC X tip extension: when?

Tip extensions add a rigid extension (typically 150 mm to 600 mm) between the gun and the tip. Use for ceiling work where the operator cannot reach the surface with the gun alone, high-wall work, tight-access work behind cabinets or between studs, and any work where extending the tip reduces operator stretching. Pair with CleanShot extension for tip-side shut-off control.

  • Pressure rating: what matches my sprayer?

Match hose pressure rating to or above the unit pump max pressure. Magnum unit run up to around 3000 PSI; Ultra and Ultra PC unit run up to 3300 PSI; industrial King 45:1 around 4500 PSI; King E60 6000 PSI; King 70:1 around 7000 PSI. BlueMax II hose range covers 3300 PSI pressure rating across most lengths and diameters; for unit above 3300 PSI confirm the matched high-pressure hose spec with GO before ordering.

Choosing the Right Airless Hose or Extension

Graco BlueMax II airless paint hoses, whip hoses, RAC X tip extensions, CleanShot extension assemblies and hose joiners for the Graco airless paint sprayer family. Match hose pressure rating to the unit pump max pressure; match hose length and diameter to the working radius and flow rate.

BlueMax II main hose: 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch. Graco BlueMax II Airless Sprayer Hose Range covers 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch hose at multiple lengths (typically 7.5 m, 15 m, 30 m). 3/8 inch for higher flow / lower pressure drop on long runs; 1/4 inch for lighter weight on shorter runs. 1/2 inch ID covers maximum-flow manifold output for viscous materials. Pressure rating must match or exceed unit pump max pressure (3,300 PSI is standard rating on most BlueMax II lengths; check spec for unit above 3,300 PSI like King 70:1).

Step-down technique for viscous materials. Best practice from Graco technical for viscous materials (Level 5 plaster, roof restoration membrane, high-build coatings): 1/2 inch x 15 m hose out of the manifold, step down to 3/8 inch x 15 m for the second length with a joining nipple. Maximises flow rate from the pump while keeping the gun-end manageable for the operator. Single piece of long 3/8 inch hose works but pressure drop is higher.

Whip hose. Graco BlueMax II Airless Whip Hoses sit between the main hose and the gun, providing the operator with a flexible short hose section for gun handling. Standard whip is 0.9 m (3 ft); longer whips available. The whip reduces operator fatigue from main-hose stiffness at the gun. Without a whip, the main-hose stiffness transfers to the operator's wrist and shoulder over long sessions.

RAC X tip extensions and CleanShot. Graco RAC X Tip Extension Range adds a rigid extension between the gun and the tip for ceiling, high-wall and tight-access work where the operator cannot get the gun close to the surface. CleanShot Extension Assembly Range adds the CleanShot tip-side shut-off valve to the extension for combined high-reach + shut-off control. Hose Joiner (1/4 inch to 1/4 inch, 156971) joins two main hose sections for extended runs.

Hose fittings: NPT standard, AU compressor note. Hose fittings on Graco equipment are NPT (National Pipe Tapered) standard. For Graco air-driven units, the compressor-side air fittings are US-spec and require a Nitto adapter for AU compressor lines (per Graco technical, this is the common fitting adjustment on King and Merkur air-driven unit in AU service).
