Scarifier Vacuums & Dust Collection.

Keep your scarifier work clean and compliant with professional vacuum and dust collection systems designed for line removal and surface preparation. Our Graco LazerVac systems and Cyclone separators capture debris as you grind, improving visibility, reducing cleanup time, and meeting Australian site dust management requirements.

FAQs

Common questions answered.

Five of the questions we hear most often on carpark and street linemarking gear. Full knowledge base on our FAQ page.

  • Why is dust collection mandatory?

Concrete dust contains respirable crystalline silica. Australian Safe Work workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica is 0.05 mg/m3 over 8 hours (2020 onwards). Exposure causes silicosis. Scarifier, grinder and saw work without effective dust capture is non-compliant. Wet methods or vacuum capture at the tool are the two compliant approaches; the LazerVac + Cyclone combination is the dry-method on-tool capture solution.

  • LazerVac 330 or LazerVac 550?

LazerVac 550 has higher airflow for larger scarifier heads and faster debris generation rates - the right pick for larger scarifier work. LazerVac 330 suits smaller scarifier or grinder work. Spec the LazerVac to the tool airflow requirement - undersized vacuum = tool dusts past the capture and fails compliance; oversized = wasted capital and freight.

  • What does the Cyclone separator do?

The Cyclone separator sits between the work and the vacuum. Heavy debris (concrete chips, grit, larger fragments) drops out of the airstream in the cyclone chamber before reaching the vacuum filter. Extends filter life significantly and reduces filter change frequency. Standard kit on any LazerVac install handling scarifier or shot-blast debris.

  • Wet methods or dry vacuum?

Wet methods reduce dust at source by adding water during cutting - compliant when the water capture is adequate. Dry vacuum capture at the tool is the alternative - compliant when the vacuum is sized for the tool airflow and the filter is rated for silica. Pick by site conditions: indoor work without water drainage suits dry vacuum; outdoor work with drainage suits wet. Some sites use both for redundancy.

  • Which scarifier cutter or drum suits my surface and finish?

Two things drive the pick: the surface you are cutting (asphalt or concrete) and the finish you need (smooth through to rough). Cutter material sets how hard it bites into the surface. Spacer count on the drum sets how fine or coarse the finished profile comes out - 0 spacers for fine, 1 spacer for medium, 2 spacers for coarse.

Drum-style cutters mill into the surface and leave a profile, so they suit surface prep, coating and line removal, leveling and grooving. Rotary-style cutters hover over the surface and lift markings without cutting grooves, so reach for those when you need lines gone with no ghost grooves left behind.

Match the cutter material to the job, lightest bite to most aggressive:

    • Wire brush and steel star - lightest. Dirt, debris and curing-compound removal, light cleaning. Finest profile, around SP1 (10 to 30 mils). Concrete or asphalt.
    • Carbide flail and carbide flat - paint, thermoplastic and tape removal, light leveling. Fine to medium profile set by spacers. The all-round choice and the safest pick on softer asphalt.
    • Carbide-tipped and full-carbide miller - epoxy, two-pack paint and thicker coatings, surface leveling. Medium to coarse profile, with longer cutter life on hard concrete.
    • Carbide pick - the most aggressive bite. Heavy leveling, anti-slip grooving and inlay prep. Coarse profile, SP8 and up. Concrete work.
    • Diamond blade - precise grooving and inlay cuts where you need a clean, controlled depth.
    • PCD (polycrystalline diamond) cutters - the fast pick for marking and coating removal. Flat profile for traffic paint and thin coatings, fine profile for durable markings and floor coatings that need an adhesion key, coarse profile for thick coatings and aggressive removal. PCD cuts up to 4x faster than diamond-blade drums and lasts over 30x longer than carbide on the same job.

Asphalt is softer than concrete, so match the cutter to the substrate - too aggressive a cutter tears asphalt up, while too light a cutter glazes concrete instead of cutting it. If you are working to a coating spec, cut to the surface profile (SP) the coating calls for and choose the cutter and spacer setup that hits it.

Scarifier Vacuums & Dust Collection

Graco LazerVac vacuum systems plus Cyclone separators and replacement consumables for dust collection on scarifier, grinder and shot-blast surface preparation work. The LazerVac is the high-flow vacuum unit; the Cyclone separator sits between the work and the vacuum to drop heavy debris out of the airstream before it reaches the vacuum filter, extending filter life. Required equipment for silica-dust compliance on concrete scarifier and grinder work in Australia.

Silica dust compliance. Concrete dust contains respirable crystalline silica - exposure causes silicosis. Australian Safe Work workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica is 0.05 mg/m3 over 8 hours (2020 onwards). Wet methods reduce dust at source; vacuum capture at the tool is the dry-method alternative. Scarifier, grinder and saw work without effective dust capture is non-compliant. The LazerVac + Cyclone combination is sized to meet on-tool capture rates for Graco scarifier work.

LazerVac sizing. Graco LazerVac 330 (smaller) and LazerVac 550 (larger) cover the AU range. The 550 has higher airflow for larger scarifier heads and faster debris generation rates. Spec the LazerVac to the tool airflow requirement - undersized vacuum lets dust escape past the capture; oversized is wasted capital and freight.

Cyclone separator + Longopac bag. The Graco Cyclone separator (32 and LP variants) sits between the work and the vacuum. Heavy debris drops out of the airstream in the cyclone chamber before reaching the vacuum filter - extends filter life significantly and reduces filter change frequency. The Longopac Bag (17W295) is the 20m continuous-bag debris collection consumable for the LazerVac 550 and Cyclone LP - tear off filled sections without losing dust containment.
