Jack Stands
Workshop jack stands rated 2t to 12t per pair from TradeQuip and Borum. The safety redundancy when a vehicle is jacked - takes the static load while the jack remains backup. Jack-stand-failure under load is a known workshop fatality cause; never shortcut this purchase.
Sizing. Tonnage rating is per pair - 2t pair = 1t per stand. Match the pair rating to the vehicle weight + safety margin. Light car 2-3t pair. SUV + light truck 3-6t pair. Medium truck 6-12t pair. Heavy truck 12-20t pair. Use stands in pairs (one per side of axle); never single-stand a vehicle.
Pin vs ratchet. Pin-style jack stands set height with a steel locking pin - simple, proven, less mechanism to fail. Ratchet stands set height with a ratcheting mechanism - faster height adjustment but ratchet pawl can wear or fail under impact. Trade preference is pin-style for primary support.
Surface + placement. Hard, level surface only. Soft surface (gravel, dirt, soft asphalt) lets the stand sink under load. Place under the manufacturer-specified lift point - unit rail or factory jack point, not body panel or suspension component. Stands on body panel can punch through under load.
