FAQs

Common questions answered.

Five of the questions we hear most often on carpark and street linemarking gear. Full knowledge base on our FAQ page.

  • HVLP or airless: which finish do I need?

HVLP for finest finish on cabinets, doors, trim, furniture and woodwork. Slowest coverage, lowest overspray, best atomisation for premium finish work. Air-assisted airless (FinishPro II 395 PC) for high-volume cabinet and joinery where pure HVLP is too slow. Standard airless (Magnum, Ultra family) for walls, ceilings, fences, decks and bulk-area work. Most cabinet contractors run an HVLP for the show pieces and an airless for the rest. FinishPro II 395 PC bridges both: airless throughput plus HVLP-class finish from one unit with the G40 HVLP gun.

  • FinishPro HVLP 7.0 versus 9.5?

FinishPro HVLP 7.0 is the 3-stage turbine entry. Sized for cabinet shop and trim work, lower duty cycle, lower price point. FinishPro HVLP 9.5 ProComp (17R081) is the production-tier turbine for sustained cabinet and door work. FinishPro HVLP 9.5 ProContractor (17R080) adds extra duty cycle for daily commercial cabinet shop use. As a working rule, 7.0 for occasional through weekly use, 9.5 ProComp for daily, 9.5 ProContractor for full-time production. The spare needles live in a small black pull-out tray on the turbine handle.

  • What is air-assisted airless?

Air-assisted airless combines airless pump pressure with low-pressure HVLP-style air atomisation. The pump feeds paint to the gun at airless pressure (high flow rate); the gun introduces low-pressure air at the tip to soften the spray pattern and reduce overspray. The result is finish quality closer to HVLP at throughput closer to airless. Graco FinishPro II 395 PC (17C321) is the matched air-assisted airless unit: airless 395 PC Pro + small compressor providing extra 10 to 15 PSI of air for atomisation. Supports the airless Contractor gun AND ships standard with the Graco G40 HVLP gun. The best of both worlds for cabinet, door and woodwork production where you need both speed and finish quality.

  • Triton SST or FinishPro?

Triton SST is conventional pressure-pot HVLP: paint feed pressure pot, AirPro HVLP gun, matched cup-and-gun spray packages. Suits cabinet shops with existing pressure-pot infrastructure or contractors running specialty waterborne or wood-finish coatings where the AirPro HVLP gun is the matched applicator. FinishPro is turbine HVLP (no separate pressure pot needed). Most cabinet contractors choose FinishPro for new fleet purchases; Triton SST stays in service where existing pressure-pot lines and AirPro guns are already in the workflow.

  • Can I use airless RAC X tips on HVLP?

No. Different atomisation systems. HVLP turbines use HVLP-specific air caps and fluid tips matched to the turbine pressure and air volume. Air-assisted airless (FinishPro II 395 PC) uses RAC X FFLP (Fine Finish Low Pressure) SwitchTips that match the lower air-assisted pressure. Standard RAC X SwitchTips are for full-pressure airless (Magnum, Ultra). Use the right tip range for the unit class - running airless RAC X on HVLP or air-assisted airless gives poor atomisation and excessive overspray. FFLP tips use a SMALLER seal than standard blue RAC X. Swap the OneSeal when switching between tip families on the same gun.

Choosing the Right HVLP or Fine Finish Sprayer

HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) and air-assisted airless sprayers atomise paint at lower pressure than standard airless, producing a finer finish with less overspray. The right call for cabinets, doors, trim, woodwork, furniture and any surface where finish quality matters more than coverage speed.

HVLP turbine: FinishPro HVLP 7.0 and 9.5 family. Graco FinishPro HVLP 7.0 3-Stage Turbine and FinishPro HVLP 9.5 (ProComp Series 17R081, ProContractor Series 17R080) are turbine-powered HVLP sprayers. The turbine drives a high volume of warm dry air through the gun, atomising paint at low pressure for a fine finish on cabinets, doors and trim. ProComp is the production tier; ProContractor adds extra duty cycle for daily cabinet shop and high-volume work. Spare needles for the FinishPro HVLP live on the turbine itself in a small black pull-out tray near the handle.

Air-assisted airless: FinishPro II 395 PC. Graco FinishPro II 395 PC Electric Air-Assisted Airless Sprayer (17C321) is the airless 395 PC Pro unit combined with a small compressor providing an extra 10 to 15 PSI of air to aid atomisation. This supports both the airless Contractor gun and ships standard with the Graco G40 HVLP gun. The best-of-both-worlds unit: airless throughput for walls, ceilings, exteriors plus HVLP-class fine finish for doors, trims, skirting. Pair with RAC X FFLP (Fine Finish Low Pressure) tips, which run at 25 to 40 percent lower pressure than standard RAC X. FinishPro II 595 PC steps up the pump for higher production with the same air-assisted technology.

Triton SST conventional pressure-pot. Graco Triton SST Spray Package family (waterborne gun, AirPro HVLP gun for wood) and Triton Aluminium variant cover conventional pressure-pot spray finish work. Suits cabinet shops with existing pressure-pot infrastructure or contractors running specialty waterborne or wood-finish coatings where the AirPro HVLP gun is the matched applicator.

Aqua Enamel and the air-assisted advantage. Note from Graco technical: Aqua Enamel and similar water-based trim paints can struggle on a standard airless handheld - viscosity sits at the upper end of what handheld airless atomises cleanly. The FinishPro II 395 PC Air-Assisted Airless solves this with the extra 10 to 15 PSI of air assist via the G40 HVLP gun. TDS for Aqua Enamel on doors and trim recommends RAC X tip 21 / 411 (NOT the 514 customers often try). Cross-reference the coating TDS before tip selection.

FFLP smaller-seal rule. RAC X FFLP (Fine Finish Low Pressure) tips use a SMALLER seal than standard blue RAC X. When switching between FFLP and standard RAC X LTX on the same gun, swap the OneSeal too, or the tip will leak. Carry a 5-pack of each OneSeal variant for FinishPro II 395 PC and other RAC X FFLP-capable unit.
