Introducing the Graco LineLazer ES 500

For line marking professionals seeking a compact, lightweight, and easily maneuverable unit, the Graco LineLazer ES 500 stands out as a powerful contender. Operated manually and powered by a reliable DeWalt FlexVolt battery system, this machine is an excellent option for small to medium-sized re-marking projects, offering impressive performance and straightforward operation. If you're looking to move away from fuel-powered units or need a versatile, fume-free addition to your fleet, the ES 500 offers a compelling blend of Graco's trusted reliability and modern, clean technology. Ideal for refreshing car park lines, defining bike paths, handling stencils, or any job where eliminating fuel and minimising noise are key advantages, the LineLazer ES 500 delivers the performance you expect in a convenient, battery-powered package.

Unpacking Your ES 500 Essentials

Inside the box, you'll find everything you need to get started: a selection of line marking tips for various applications (LL5319 and Rac 5 517), a Rac 5 Tip Guard, a bottle of Throat Seal Liquid, the owner's manual, Graco’s dependable Silver Plus gun, and two 18/54V 6aH FleXBolt DeWalt batteries with a rapid charger. The fast charger will have your batteries ready in about an hour, allowing you to alternate between the two and often run a full shift with minimal downtime.

The Step-by-Step Setup

Setting up your ES 500 is straightforward. First, focus on the tips and guards. Each tip comes in its own packet with a small O-ring, known as the ‘OneSeal.’ This must be installed inside the tip guard before inserting the tip itself. (We’ve got a detailed video on Graco OneSeals and why they’re important - check it out.) Once the seal is in place, insert your tip. These are reversible for easy cleaning - arrow back for jet flush, arrow forward for your spray fan.

A standard 419 tip is ideal for marking approximately 150 mm lines or edge lines. Because it uses a soft seal, it can be hand-tightened. Flip the tip to the spray position and ensure it’s aligned for an even fan. A typical height for a 150 mm line is about 300 mm off the ground. You can adjust this using the indicators on the gun arm, marked in 50 mm increments. The gun arm can also be extended or moved to either side of the unit for maximum flexibility.

Key Features

The ES 500 includes several user-friendly features:

  • Trigger safety lock – Always engage this when not actively spraying, adjusting tips, or moving the gun. Skin injection is a serious risk, so caution is essential.

  • Left handlebar trigger – Controls the front wheel. It includes an auto-align lock for straight lines; release to lock and pull to unlock for smooth curves.

  • Right handlebar trigger – Activates the Silver Plus gun for line marking.

  • Rear brake – Keeps the unit secure when stopped, especially on inclines. Make it a habit to engage it during every pause.

Priming and Pre-Operation Checklist

Before starting any line marking, the unit must be properly primed. Use water to flush out any storage fluids or residues, ensuring a clean and consistent paint flow. Pay close attention to pressure settings. The gauge should read just under 2,000 PSI when the unit is primed and ready. Monitoring this is crucial for achieving the desired spray pattern and line quality.

Laying Down Perfect Lines: Simple Operation Tips

To lay straight lines, lock the front wheel using the left trigger. Walk at a steady pace, maintaining a consistent spray gun height for even results. Begin with a low pressure setting and increase gradually for optimal paint flow. Use the right trigger for clean starts and stops.

For curves, unlock the front wheel and use gentle, controlled movements with the left trigger. Adjust the spray tip orientation for line width - arrow pointing sideways for standard lines. Different tip numbers produce different line widths, so consult your guide and test on cardboard. When spraying adjacent lines, overlap slightly to avoid gaps.

When working with stencils, use narrower tips. Refer to your Graco guide for the correct sizes. We often recommend the Rac 5 517, which you can see here. Secure the stencil with tape or weights and spray light, even coats while keeping the gun directly above the stencil. Short bursts prevent blurry edges, and a consistent height ensures clean results.

If the tip gets clogged, lock the trigger, reverse the tip, and spray into a waste bin to clear it. If this doesn’t work, clean the tip manually with appropriate tools.

Maintaining Peak Performance and Longevity

Thorough cleaning after each use is essential. Flush the unit with water if using Water-Based Paints, or the recommended solvent for Solvent-Based paints to prevent paint buildup. For long-term care, regularly apply Graco Pump Armour after cleaning to lubricate and protect internal components from rust, corrosion, and drying during storage. This helps maintain the ES 500 in peak condition and extends its lifespan. Don’t forget to clean the filters and spray tips thoroughly to ensure optimal performance and prevent blockages.

The Verdict: Why the ES 500 is Your Go-To Battery-Operated Line Marker
