Why choose an M-class dust extractor?

Proven Performance for User Protection

M-class dust extractors are designed for professional users in collision repair, construction, and woodworking, specifically for tasks that generate medium-risk dust, such as sanding hardwood, plaster, putty, latex, and oil paints. This type of dust has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) of greater than 0.1 mg/m³, meaning the dust extractor must retain 99.9% of the dust to ensure safety. To meet these standards, the airflow in the suction hose must be at least 20 m/s.

M-class dust extractors are not suitable for hazardous dust with OEL values below 0.1 mg/m³, hot materials like burning cigarettes or hot ash, flammable or explosive liquids such as petrol, solvents, acids, or alkalis, and flammable or explosive dust like magnesium or aluminium dust.

Built for trade crews working with plasterboard, MDF, concrete, brick, and silica-containing materials, the DEXOS 1217 weighs 13.9 kg and combines a 17-litre canister with a brushless motor and 250 mbar of suction. These are the dust types where Australian WHS rules require M-class extraction.

It includes Auto Filter Cleaning (AFC) that clears the filter on a programmable interval, an autostart power outlet that triggers the extractor when a connected tool is switched on, and Bluetooth connectivity via the myMirka app for airflow monitoring and firmware updates.

Compared to L-class extractors, the DEXOS 1217 captures fine dust below the 0.1 mg/m³ OEL threshold that applies to most construction dusts in Australia.

Who it's for: painters, sanders, renovators, and licensed trades working with hazardous dust.

Who it's not for: H-class work such as asbestos, mould, or carcinogenic dust below 0.1 mg/m³ OEL. For those, use an H-class extractor from our dust extractors range.

Let’s Answer Your Questions

What is an M-class dust extractor, and when do I need one?

M-class (Medium hazard) dust extractors capture at least 99.9% of dust particles and are required for materials with occupational exposure limits (OEL) greater than 0.1 mg/m³. In Australia, M-class is mandatory when working with plasterboard, MDF, concrete, brick, engineered stone, and any material containing crystalline silica. L-class extractors aren't sufficient for these materials, and H-class is a separate requirement for asbestos, mould, and carcinogenic materials rated below 0.1 mg/m³ OEL. The Mirka DEXOS 1217 M AFC meets the M-class standard and is approved for use under Australian WHS regulations.

L-class vs M-class vs H-class: which dust extractor do I need?

The three classes map to dust hazard levels set by EN 60335-2-69. L-class handles low-hazard dust such as soft wood and plaster (OEL greater than 1 mg/m³), M-class handles medium-hazard dust including hardwood, MDF, concrete, brick, and silica-containing materials (OEL greater than 0.1 mg/m³), and H-class is required for high-hazard materials including asbestos, mould, lead, and carcinogenic dust (OEL below 0.1 mg/m³). For most Australian construction, renovation, and sanding work, M-class is the minimum legal requirement and the DEXOS 1217 sits in that category. For higher capacity in the same class, see the Mirka 1230 M-Class dust extractor.

Can the Mirka DEXOS 1217 be used with tools from other brands?

Yes. The DEXOS 1217 uses a standard 35 mm hose connection that works with most Festool, Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Mirka power tools. The autostart power outlet (rated up to 2,400 W on the Australian 240 V model) triggers the extractor automatically when a connected power tool is switched on, regardless of brand. If your tool has a non-standard dust port, a 27 mm or 36 mm adapter can be fitted to the hose end.

What does the myMirka app do, and do I need it to use the DEXOS 1217?

The myMirka app connects to the DEXOS 1217 over Bluetooth and provides real-time airflow monitoring, programmable Auto Filter Cleaning (AFC) intervals, firmware updates, service reminders, and runtime statistics. The app is free on iOS and Android. The extractor works fully standalone without the app, and most users pair the app once during setup and rarely need to open it again.

How does the Mirka DEXOS 1217 compare to the Festool CT MIDI-I?

The Mirka DEXOS 1217 and Festool CT MIDI-I are both M-class extractors in a similar size and price bracket. The DEXOS 1217 has a larger canister (17 L vs 15 L), a brushless motor for longer service life, built-in Auto Filter Cleaning, and Bluetooth connectivity via the myMirka app. The CT MIDI-I has a slightly smaller footprint and integrates with the Festool SYSTAINER storage ecosystem. Choose the DEXOS 1217 if you want AFC, longer motor life, and app control, or choose the CT MIDI-I if you're already committed to the Festool tool and SYSTAINER system.
