FAQs

Common questions answered.

Five of the questions we hear most often on carpark and street linemarking gear. Full knowledge base on our FAQ page.

  • Which pump or repair kit fits my Graco sprayer?

Match by unit serial. The Graco Pump Repair Kit Range is a meta-product covering multiple sprayer variants. The variant selection depends on the specific Magnum / Ultra / Ultra Max II ProContractor / FinishPro GX / industrial unit and serial. Send the unit serial to GO and we will pull the matched repair kit, prime valve and packing set for one delivery. Major unit-specific kits (Mark family carbide seats, GX series, King 45:1, Merkur X48) are listed in the wider Pump Service Parts collection.

  • How does the Vortex pump extend service life?

The Vortex pump (standard on Ultra Max II ProContractor series and Mark V XT) replaces the standard piston-pump vertical-drive design with a rotating-rod design. Packings last around 6 times longer than the standard piston-pump system because the rotating drive distributes wear. The cartridge pre-packed repacking system replaces individual packing stacking and oiling - you can repack in-house without a Graco service agent, significantly reducing service downtime. The Extreme Rod is an abrasion-resistant composite that resists the kind of pump-rod scoring that ends piston-pump service life. For full-time daily contractor use, the Vortex pump pay-back is the central case for stepping up from Ultra non-PC to Ultra Max II ProContractor.

  • Top-end repair or full-pump replacement?

Top-end repair (packings, piston, seat kit) when the pump body and manifold are still in good condition and wear is in the high-wear top-end. Full-pump replacement when the body is worn, the manifold is damaged, or the top-end has been rebuilt repeatedly. As a working rule, plan for several top-end rebuilds before full-pump replacement on properly maintained units. Skipping Pump Armour end-of-shift flush shortens this significantly.

  • Pump ratios: which one for which coating?

1:1 (Triton diaphragm, air spray). 30:1 around 3000 PSI for protective coatings and air-assisted airless (Merkur ES, Merkur). 42:1 plus for heavy protective coatings like Jotacote 605 (Merkur X48 48:1, 4800 PSI). 45:1 for industrial high-viscosity (King 45:1, ~180 CFM compressor). 60:1 for multi-gun large projects (King 60:1, E-King 60). 70:1 for intumescent fireproofing - heaviest coatings (King 70:1). Match pump ratio to coating viscosity per the coating TDS - heavier coatings need higher ratios.

  • How often should I service the pump?

Inspect packings at every service interval per the Graco operator manual. Replace packings when pump bypass appears (paint pressure drops during continuous spray) or visible leak. Replace piston / seat at the longer service interval (typically 2-3x packing replacement interval). Run Pump Armour at end of every shift - the single biggest determinant of pump rebuild interval and the most-skipped service step. For Vortex pumps on Ultra Max II ProContractor + Mark V XT, the cartridge pre-packed repacking can be done in-house without workshop visit; pre-pack cartridge replaces individual packing stacking + oiling.

Choosing the Right Sprayer Pump or Repair Kit

Graco sprayer pumps and repair kits for the Magnum, Ultra, Ultra Max II ProContractor, FinishPro GX, industrial GX 19 / 21, King and Mark series. 380 products from full-pump replacements through unit-matched repair kits, prime valves, packing kits, transducers and seal lubricants.

Vortex pump on ProContractor: 6x packing life. The Graco Vortex pump (standard on Ultra Max II ProContractor series and Mark V XT) replaces the standard piston-pump vertical-drive design with a rotating-rod design. Three key advantages. Packings last around 6 times longer than the standard piston-pump system because the rotating drive distributes wear. The cartridge pre-packed repacking system replaces individual packing stacking and oiling (you can repack in-house without a Graco service agent). The Extreme Rod is an abrasion-resistant composite that resists the kind of pump-rod scoring that ends piston-pump service life. Net effect: significantly less service downtime over multi-year daily-contractor use.

Endurance Chromex full-pump replacements. Graco Pump Repair Kit Range covers full-pump and top-end replacement across the Graco sprayer family. Triax Triple Piston Pump Range covers the Triax triple-piston designs on selected industrial unit - three pistons on a common drive cycle produce smoother flow output than single-piston designs, reducing pulsation in the spray pattern. Match the pump to the unit serial. Full-pump replacement is the right call when the body is worn beyond rebuild.

Pump ratios and unit matching. 1:1 (Triton diaphragm, air spray, fluid delivery). 30:1 around 3000 PSI (Merkur ES / Merkur for protective coatings and air-assisted airless). 42:1 plus around 4200 PSI (Merkur X48 for heavy protective coatings like Jotacote 605). 45:1 around 4500 PSI (King 45:1 for industrial high-viscosity). 60:1 around 6000 PSI (King 60:1, E-King 60 for multi-gun large projects). 70:1 around 7000 PSI (King 70:1 for intumescent fireproofing - heaviest coatings). King 45:1 air-driven needs around 180 CFM compressor. Generator sizing for electric pumps: aim for 6 to 7 kVA including motor start.

Repair kits and packings. Top-end repair kits cover the high-wear pump components (packings, piston, seat) without requiring full-pump replacement. Prime Valve Range covers the prime / spray valve assembly that switches the unit between prime mode and spray mode. Seal Lube extends packing and piston seal life on infrequent-use units (apply per the Graco operator manual on the piston shaft and at the packing nut during long-storage shutdown). UHMWPE / PTFE Packings Repair Kit (222875) is the standard packing kit for waterborne and solvent paint use.

Pump Armour: the single biggest pump-life determinant. End-of-shift Pump Armour flushing extends pump rebuild interval significantly. Skipping Pump Armour is the most common cause of premature pump failure. End-of-shift workflow: drain remaining paint, run a clean-water flush on waterborne paint (or appropriate solvent on solvent paint), fill the pump with Pump Armour for storage. Order the matched repair kit plus Pump Armour plus Seal Lube on first delivery.
